The latest tech trend is Wi-Fi Network Naming! Aside from having some fun, changing the name does have other benefits.
Your network name is known as the Service Set Identifier also known as SSID for short. Your router usually determines the SSID out of the box and your network may have a name like TP-Link_016121, netgear42, Linksys00057, ORBI71 or something similar.
Changing the name of your network could be fun. Especially if you get the kids involved! Brainstorm with your family or partner for something clever that will put a smile on your face whenever you see it pop up on your screens.
Fun is not the only reason you should change your SSID name. Maybe multiple people on your block have Linksys routers and this can lead to confusion. Changing the name of your network can help scare hackers. They figure that someone who took this small step might have more protection in place than someone who never bothered.
An SSID can be up to 32 characters in length and use a combination of letters and numbers. It is case-sensitive. Don’t use any personal identifying information in your SSID! For example, your birthday, apartment number, favourite hockey team, or your pet’s name. The name can be quirky but also remember that your visitors are going to see it, so don’t use anything too crazy!
We grabbed some examples from sites online. You may find one below that you like or this may inspire you to create your own!
Whether you decide to go with one of the funny SSID names above or something else there are a few important guidelines that you should follow.
As long as you follow those tips there shouldn't be many network security risks to worry about. If you're thinking about hiding your SSID to keep hackers away, don't bother—even if the SSID isn't being broadcast, others can still find it using packet sniffers and probe requests. Always take network security seriously, even if your network name isn’t!
